Ohio has received a verbal commitment from Iowa Western Community College wide receiver Matt Waters. The 6-1, 200-pounder will graduate this month. This past season, Waters had 43 catches for 694 yards and 6 TD's.

Do you think this is the end of our WR recruiting for this class?  Or would we still take someone like Dayne Hammond, Tres Barksdale, or Justin Hardee?

Could be.....if not maybe just 1 of the 3 you mentioned.

Sorry, but I don't really get this pickup. From what I can tell he has no other offers and doesn't look particularly fast. And (I assume) he only has 2 years to play. I trust our coaches, usually, but this signing is confusing.

Possession receivers don't need to be lightning quick...They just need good hands and good route skills.

Correct and if coach Dixon likes him he must be a warrier/soldier.  Coach Dixon would be the best judge of WR talent in the MAC. I will not be the fan second guesing him.

He blocks well and has decent YAC's.........combine that with great hands and we should have a winner.

I didn't think OHIO was desperate enough at the WR position to bring in a JUCO.. At the DE position that is another story and I can see why they decided to go out and pull in a guy from CC for some depth up front.

I don't understand the criticism.  Again, we have totally solid receivers so Coach Dixon recruits 'em and develops 'em.  It's difficult to not trust Coach given his very fine track record.

Frankly, I don't think you're on this squad on this receiver unless you are pretty good...hands, blocking, etc.

A package deal maybe. Much like the Jones-Turner deal in 2004. And this years Tampa guys. You have to admit that some guys don't mind having a old friend around.  Can you say Beau?

That is because OHIO has in the past with Solich and as a general rule you bring in a JUCO when there is too much of a talent or experience gap within a position unit to be as competitive on the field as you would like to be. Notice that Ohio has moved away from JUCO recruits at QB and RB now that a nice pipeline has been built at both positions. The assumption that I and a few others are going by is that the WR unit is built and we don't need help there. Therefore I think with this recruit is they really liked what they were seeing to the point that they decided to add him in as a best available. Look at how Thad Turner turned out; he was supposed to be the sidecar in that package deal with Brandon Jones but turned out the better player signing a free agent contract with the NFL.

I think all incoming guys are potatoes until they prove they can play at this level. I am questioning this signing and comparing him to other MAC teams Wr's he is nothing special. Is he better than Bussey, Futrell or Dovell ehhh not so sure those guys are good athletes and do well in spot duty. We dont need spot duty once Levon is gone. With that said WR Chris Murray was MVP of a fla all-star game..he looks like a gamebreaker.

The entire recruiting process and evaluation is of course interesting to me.  How you determine who you offer no doubt differs from team to team.  How much weight does each team put on the obvious tangibles like speed and size?
How much do they break down every aspect as in a WR's hands and speed and size and blocking and YAC's etc. etc.? What do they think about other things like grades and character and leadership....the Tim Tebow effect?

Is he better than Bussey or Futrell or Dovell? From a pure athletic sense no. But will he be as or more productive than those 3?  Stay tuned.  Futrell was recruited as a db but has quickness. Dovell mayb be the best of the lot what with his size and seemingly big play ability. I'm waiting for Bussey to have that breakout game and to remain consistent. Will it happen?  Again.....stay tuned.

I've questioned in-game coaching decisions by this staff.  But I give the staff a very high grade for the recent recruiting--for the talent level of the young men as well as their ability to fit in (and stick with) with the team, their progress academically (no particularly bad reports), and for their play on the field.

It just seems to get better and better.

I'm thinking we have a few candidates in the pipeline and should start to see one or two emerge in the next year or so...

Speaking of Matt (and Ty)...I found this article fascinating...Impressive to say the least...

For those of you that listen to Bill King...The fact that they're located in Council Bluffs cracked me up too...

I stand by this comment. The guy is our seventh WR in terms of catches and gives us nothing we didn't already have. Another boneheaded decision.

When you recruit a JUCO,  the goal isn't to get a star. The goal is to get a role player to help out a position that is short-handed. He has been exactly that, a solid role player. Foster has 518 yards in receptions, followed by Bussey at 266. Waters is one of 7 players that in the cluster that comes next, with between 166 and 200 yards.

Here's a list of prior JUCO's:
2005 - Earvin Jackson, S
2005 - Voncarie Owens, RB
2006 - Alan Goff, DL
2006 - Chido Nwokocha, WR
2007 - Erik Ejikke, OLB
2007 - Theo Scott, QB
2008 - Hilton Dawson, S
2008 - Boo Jackson, QB
2008 - Corey Moncrief, DL
2008 - Patrick Tafua, S
2009 - Kadre Pinder, OL
2010 - Kenny Ashley, RB
2010 - Octavius Leftwich, CB
2010 - Omar Leftwich, CB
2010 - Joe Morales, ILB
2011 - Mose Denton, CB
2011 - Tyler Knight, TE
2011 - Brad Spivey, DE
2012 - Ty Branz, DE
2012 - Matt Waters, WR
2012 - Tim Edmond, ILB
2012 - Wade Wells, DE

I believe that Nwokocha, Ejikke, Scott, Jackson, Tafua, and Omar Leftwich were the only regular starters from this group, while many of the rest were role players, and some never even showed up. I'd put Waters in the upper half of this group in terms of his contributions, and he isn't even a Senior yet. With all the injuries at WR, I'm more than a little surprised that anyone would question this addition at this point.
