Looks like we have a new addition to the fall roster...Kendric Smith, a 6-3, 230 DE out of Texas via LSU...HS class of 2010. Looks like he was a walkon at LSU as a tight end and made the 2011 spring roster before enrolling at Ohio. No word on his sit out status.

Can't be mad at a kid that's coming from a SEC power walk-on or not gotta say he will help in some area pretty soon.

Here's his page on the LSU roster. At Harker Heights he played WR and TE. Here's a highlight video. What I liked about his game is that he has a good motor - he's always playing to the final whistle, and as a receiver, looking for someone to block downfield if he isn't the receiver. There's one pick, and he's the man there to hit the DB, and causes, then recovers a fumble. DE may be a good spot for him.

I am pretty sure that even though he was not a scholarship player, he has to sit out a year.  Makes no sense to me that a walk-on would have to sit-out - but then we are talking about the NCAA - so if it doesn't make sense, it probably applies.

Here are the NCAA transfer rules. There are exceptions that allow people to transfer without sitting out, but they are pretty limited. Go to page 19 for the transfer rules from one four year school to another. As I understand it, for the exception to apply:
1. He needs to be a qualifier
2. It needs to be his first transfer
3. He must not have been recruited by his first 4 year school
4. He must never have received an athletic scholarship
5. Be in good academic standing and making progress to his degree
6. Would have still been eligible had he stayed at his first school
7. Have a written release from his first school saying they don't mind if he gets an exception to the sit-out rule

Thus, as I read it, it is not impossible that the exception could apply, but I would have no way to know if all these conditions have been met.

According to the Post link on the homepage, Kendric will play DB.

http://thepost.ohiou.edu/content/football-ohio-adds-lsu-transfer-another-oral-commitment

A DB of his size would be great, especially considering the loss of Carrie and Moore after this season. Maybe he'll be a hard hitting safety or some kind of hybrid linebacker?

It amazes how we can pull in a guy like this from seemingly anywhere the country. Is there some kind of network of walk-ons looking to transfer? Maybe he just had personal connections to members on the team or staff? I don't know how the coaching staff does it, but props to them.

I don't see anything in the post article about him playing DB. It refers to him as a TE. Maybe they changed it? In any case, positions can change, so we'll see where he ends up. It also doesn't clear up whether he has to sit a year or not.

From the link: "He posted on his Facebook account June 6th that he became the 'newest member of the Bobcat family', and according to Smith’s account, he will play defensive back for Ohio."

That being said LC, your earlier post outlines the information pertinent to Smith's eligibility (which was great by the way). I wish the employees of the Post would check BobcatAttack on a regular basis. If they did they would find the questions to answer in their articles. They didn't address Kendric's eligibility (requires the journalist to confer with a member of the OHIO staff) and they did not accurately portray the number of commitments in OHIO's class (which always seems to reflect their lack of due diligence).

Oops, I see it now. I'll blame my allergies for not being all here today. Always in mid-July this happens for about one week. I don't know what it is that I'm allergic to, but I'm always glad when it's over. Then I'll be fine till late August.

OT: Man, I had almost forgotten how much I hate The Post's online format. It looks more like Craigslist than a newspaper website.

Uhhhh, his Facebook page actually says he will play defensive end. Seems to be a blunder by the Post reporter or copy editor.

This may preclude him from playing anywhere on defense or offense this year:

If you have never been recruited by the Division I or II school you plan to attend, you may be able to use this exception if you:
•  Have not received an athletics scholarship; and
•  Have not practiced beyond a 14 consecutive-day period at any school or participated in intercollegiate competition before your transfer.

He practiced at LSU.

Has anyone heard anything concrete?

One more question - I note that the thread title now says "Kendric Smith......Ohio Signee". Is he going to be on scholarship? Or is he a walkon? That isn't in the Post article, either. Some transfers have been awarded scholarships immediately, others had to earn it.

It would be nice if 2 things happened.....he can play this year and can pressure opponent QB's.

Not saying that we won't find a person who can do this amongst those on the roster...but some of the pre-season publications mention this as a weakness for us this year.

I don't remember The Post or any other publication coming out with as much Ohio football recruiting information during the summer months.   It's a good sign for where Ohio football is today and the direction that The Post is going.  Keep it up!

You guys have a few things mixed up on here lol. Kendric smith is a transfer from LSU but transfered to Blinn college before coming to Ohio University and obtained his AA degree so he will not have to sit out at all and has 3 more years of eligibility to play. He has been recruited as a scholarship player for Ohio University, is 6' 3" 245, and will be playing DE

Thanks, Donya. That clears up the questions we had. Good luck to him.

He's not in last year's Blinn media guide or on the roster.

Blinn....former school of Cam Newton.

Excellent - thanks for the info.  As he will learn, relying on the Post for info is like relying on a 4-year old.  Sounds like you know him.  Tell him welcome aboard.

Maybe didn't play, since he still has 3 years after being at LSU for a year?

Thanks Donya, that Kendric has his AA in hand is indicative of a good student/athlete. He has been keeping on schedule to graduate in four years which is not easy with an athlete's commitments.

This is an interesting addition to the team. The reason I say that is that there are already 11 defensive ends on scholarship (twelve if you count Hastings), which is 5.5 per spot, more scholarship depth than any other position. Does this addition indicate concern that the JUCO's they brought in, Wells and Branz, are not as good as they hoped? That none of the Freshmen/Sophomores are developing as fast as they hoped? That some of the current DE's will be moving inside to DT? Or, perhaps, just that Kendric is a truly outstanding player, a difference maker, and they want him in spite of not having a specific need?  The other question that comes to mind is how they evaluated him, if he never actually played for LSU, and he didn't play for Blinn.

I really don't know what it all means. I'm sure they have a good reason. It will be interesting to see how things develop this fall, since the two-deep rotation at DE is definitely a question mark.

I would say all of the above.

DE is in ggod hands with Tremayne Stephens and Nic Barber...word is the new DL coach will be letting the dogs loose more often this year than the prior coach. Coach Jesse Williams is on facebook as well as several other coaches...he is an exciting man and I think his DL will be fun to watch
