Joe Flading arrived in Athens a 240 lb lineman, having been 2nd team all-conf, lettering twice out of high school.  He then redshirted,  picked up his first start and letter as a RS Freshman., was 3rd tm All-MAC as a soph, then 1st team his junior year then honorable mention all-american hsi senior year.  It ws fun to follow.  I prefer to follow the Joe Fladings over the 5 star guys. Who thinks they can name the 2012 recruit with a Joe Flading up-side?  Seems the whole group comes in with all-state recognition behind them, but, Davon Henry seems like a future team leader to me, hope I am right.

Maybe not going out on a big limb here, but Chris Murray looks like he has superstar potential for many years in this conference.

There are a ton of upside potential (don't you hate that word) in this class....the difference in the word potential from this class to the way back machine is our  old potential was 240 pound OT's  that we hoped would grow and 4.7 in the forty wide receivers that we hope would get faster.

From Sebastian Smith to Jake Schany to Mike Roberts and more the list could go on and on.

My pick is Trae Clark.....sure 350 pounds and other health issues are a concern....but Colerain plays a tough schedule.....when you watch offensive lineman bouncing off of him on their feeble block attempts I can only say that Marcellis will guide this man from on high....and he seems to be a man amongst boys.

I can't wait to see Clark suit up in the green and white.  The defensive line with Crutcher and Clark, hopefully with a good pass rush from the ends would be a load for most MAC offensive lines.  This assuming Clark pans out, but our staff does a good job at getting a lot from our players.

There are also backups returning suitable to allow Clark to RS and ease into the college routine.

RS is of course always the best course.....but if you're the best DT on the field why stay off the field?

Calm down guys..Clark is not the best DT anywhere yet this guy is still in High school..its Huynh,Jones and Crutcher. Unless a situation arises like last season where they HAD to burn Crutchers redshirt then I dont see Clark hitting the field this year at all. Coaches across the MAC comment on how well coached and seasoned Ohio's football usually is and this is because coach can afford to redshirt guys. I think it is sometimes over stated how great you actually have to be to come in even at the MAC level and play as a true freshman..its no easy task and for the guys in the SEC,BIG TEN that do it well there is a reason usually they are 4-5 star super athletes.

Mike Roberts is another.....he can outrun dudes.....he makes great catches.....and I luv the video where he blocks the cornerback off of the screen.

And as far as calming down this thread is not about who will play next year but who has a great upside....but a lot of the "not calming down" syndrome comes from the coaches.....statements like "all are ready" and "maybe half could/will play" doesn't calm one down.

Yeah thats true but a lot of that is "coach speak" they know that the recruits and possible future recruits are listening..what are they supposed to say..."Well we have 3 stud players with game exp at those spots so look for this kid to develop for the next 2 season before we throw him in there" LOL

Its also good for the recruits to have the mind set of battling for a starting spot even if everyone knows most of the class will redshirt because who knows a few guys might actually play..Looking at last years class at least 90 percent did redshirt.

Used to be the most popular player to support was the 2nd team QB, now it seems it is the freshman DT.  Last season Mr. Crutcher was expected to come in and imediately take over, this year, Mr. Clark.  Ohio has some nasty juniors and seniors coming back.  Me thinks the freshmen will be learning the difference between high school and college ball.  JMHO

To explain my excitement over the two of them, Clark and Crutcher are both HUGE guys and come from two of the top high school programs in Ohio.

edit:
Forget the names, if I hear we have 300+ pound DT's coming in from Glenville and Colerain, I'm going to be pumped.  Add to it that both of these guys had big-time offers and chose US!

My great hope for this next year is that they can get enough people back that they can still get that redshirt for Crutcher. As well as he will do next year, I'll trade it having an extra year at the end. I would love to see him as a fifth year senior. What really sucks (though not as much as Miami), is when you have a guy like Jameson Hartke who used up a year of eligibility playing sparingly as a Freshman, and never redshirted. If he could have played one more year at the end instead, that would have been ever so much better.

From speaking with the current Def Linemen they are really excited about the new coach..with his record at New Mexico of having a large number of sacks from the DL positions they hope that their is a bit of a different approach than the last DL coach of CONTAIN CONTAIN CONTAIN and more of a GO GETEM ATTITUDE.

Note, Mr. Crutcher is listed at 278, good weight, but, not yet 300+.  Mr Clark, 300+, yes, but, the + is a concern. I worry for him.  I hope he can remain healthy and athletic. Further, I like to see freshmen have a strong start academically so they don't fall behind and wind up overwelmed and out of school too soon. The RS year is cheap insurance of a graduate level player for the cost of a freshman.

OUr coaching staff is conservative in its comments.  They say little but produce nicely.  It is markedly unusual and different for them to state that many of the players who will be in their first year after high school are ready to play.

I'm not saying that they would not benefit from a redshirt year.  But for the coaches to say 'ready now' is totally excellent.

I agree 100% with Monroe on this. Never, ever, has the staff been that optimistic with their praise. I don't know hwy they would say that if they didn't feel this class had several with a good chance to play some.  I'll throw out that this may be the last class that Frank sees graduating as well.
