Patterson, Ohio's latest RB recruit, is called a top sleeper.  See "Talahassee Nike: Top Sleepers." A very nice analysis of his abilities will be found by clicking on the the quoted heading which is shown at the bottom of his Rival's rating.  This kid looks good.

He has his detractors on here....not me as he's been my top RB since Day 1.....just like when I backed Harden since Day 1.

The detractors use ammo like he only run's a 4.7 (if so all the DB's in Florida run a 5.7)....no one recruited him (may have been scared off by size)....and that 5'7"-165 is too small for an RB.

Just watch his videos.....someone mentioned him looking like Barry Sanders.....not sure about that but the first person I thought about was Harden.

The guy is a solid get. Looks physical from the videos. I would like to see Ohio get serious about recruiting the running back position this year and sign 3 talented freshman with the best 2 out of the 3 to play right away. More talent and depth is needed at RB.

I'd actually cool it on the RB recruiting since Blankenship and Boykin still have two more years and we also have Hammonds and Fulcher as freshmen.

Are any of these RB's 1,500 yard back kind of guys? If the answer is no which I think it is then we need to keep recruiting.

This is college, we don't need a 1,500 yard back. We need a couple guys to spread it around to, guys that can make plays and catch the ball out of the backfield. Harden is not a 1,500 yard back, but he is perfect in our offense.

Another big back would be nice....but Daz is a game changer....game breaker....can't have enough of those.

Harden is 700 yards on the year with 4-5 games to go. Our next best RB has 350 yards on the season. My point is the door is wide open for a stud RB to come into Athens and be a game changer for the program like Bernard Pierce. With no franchise RB in the stable the Cats at a minimum need to look at signing a few extra RBs in hopes that one of them pan out. Its not like the QB situation where Tettleton is only a sophomore and already putting up huge yards with 4 other promising young QB's in the pipeline. My perception is recruiting at the RB position is picking up over the last year or so but it has a ways to go yet before it has my stamp of approval.

As of right now there are 8 RB's on the roster. Four guys are graduating next year in Harden, Brown, Favors and Inks. Patterson is coming in as a true freshman to make 5 for next year. I was thinking 8 would be the right number to have in the program but I didn't realize we have 8 already in the roster right now. At a minimum you are probably going to want at least 6 RB's in the program. Four guys for the depth chart and another 1-2 to redshirt. The door is wide open in the depth chart for a stud freshman to come in and become the guy right away. Only 2 backs in the program have been redshirted at this point so you can redshirt a couple of them while letting a franchise RB roll. Who knows Patterson may be that guy for OHIO as a fresh to step in big like Chris Garrett did a few years back.

Harden (RS-Senior)
Blankenship (RS-Soph)
Boykin (RS-Soph)
Brown (RS-Senior)
Favors (RS-Senior)
Hammonds (Fresh)
Inks (RS-Senior)
Fulcher (Fresh)

Aren't rb's also guys you can look at for other positions--db's, receivers, linebackers, perhaps?!

Yes. I was thinking special teams. KR/PR duties.

I believe you're right. I think there was some confusion when Ryan Clark switched to #31 that Brown was playing, but I believe his redshirt is intact.

If Brown is in the mix that would give us 6 backs for 2012 and spread apart in experience with a senior, 2 juniors, 2 sophomores and a freshman. If Patterson is as good as advertised i can see him in the rotation with Boykin, Brown and Blankenship. Hammonds or Fulcher takes a redshirt. Patterson on KR/PR duties and 10 plays a game in the offense. With the TE's recovering from injury next season we won't have to rely as much on the backfield producing.

I was under the impression that Hammonds and Fulcher were redshirting right now.

I don't see their names showing up in the game participation notes so i have to believe you are correct.

I saw a funny description of a running back the other day. It described him at 5-6, 199 lbs. That's all good, but they had an issue with where they broke the line spacing, which was after the dash, which made me do a double take. At first glance it looked like he was 5- and 6,199 lbs. Sign him up - he's probably not fast, but no one will be able to stop him.

4.8 GPA

That's a bowling-ball style of RB.  A typical bowling ball is 8.5 inches in diameter and 14lbs.  Scale that up to about five feet (multiply the diameter by seven) and it should weigh 7^3*14lbs or 4,802lbs.

Looks like Patterson will be in for Spring.

SIdebar: You'd have to think a QB named Coney will fit in great in Cincinnati.
