ok so with 18 opening for the class of 2012  and 4 of the spots already filled.
OL TONY WATSON 6-6 260
RB David Fulcher Jr. 5-10 196 (grayshirt)
TE ALEX SMITH 6-5 260 tranfer from kentucky. he was a 4 star in 2010
K Grant Venham 6-3 205 (grayshirt)

so that only gives us 14 open spots. but as of right now i really like this 1012 class

I would expect 22-24 spots open.

I have been pretty dissapointed with the recruiting class announced thus far. Part of the issue may be the amount of talent in the program already and the perceived lack of playing time. Last year it looked like Solich cleaned up in the MAC recruiting wars but I'm not seeing it this season. He has mentioned that not being in an urban area is a disadvantage to recruiting the state of Ohio. It most states the BCS schools are not located in urban areas but in this state both OSU and UC are urban and then you have Toledo and Akron as alternatives. Miami has a big advantage over OHIO too located close to Cincinnati Area HS football hotbed and an excellent reputation in that region.

In Virginia for example, Virginia Tech has a Frank (Beamer) is able to get the players while located in the middle of knowhere because the state only has 1 other FBS school (UVA) with an elite public ivy atmosphere that is a detriment to recruits. In North Carolina the recruiting climate is more like Ohio in that the 4 BCS schools are concentrated in the more urban area of the state and saturate all the talent. East Carolina has a glass celing despite a huge amount of fan support by location and non-BCS status. One of the differences between ECU and Ohio is they are playing a BCS school every year at home to ramp up ticket sales but with strong schedules they play they can't run the table. Maybe it just makes sense then for Ohio then to play the weak non-conference giving the program a better shot at a 4-0 start, dominate MAC foes on the field to destabilize their programs, leading to a constant turnover in coaches so they can never get established on the recruiting trail. Use the winning to put money into the stadium, furthering the perception the OHIO is a big time program and not just another MAC school.

The 2012 class only has one recruit in my book......and Watson is a good one.  Venham and Fulcher belong with the 2011 group and Smith has headed south (in more ways than one).

You can't get overly pessimistic at this point even though we just have one verbal.  Sure it would be nice to have 10 or more verbals like some have....but many are in the same boat as us.....with one or none.....most of the people in our recruiting group are on every MAC schools board.....good players offered by all the MAC schools who are just waiting to make their decision.

This actually could turn out to be a good class....it will be tough to match last year's group... but Frank and the boys always come up with 11th hour nuggets.

True Doc. The question i think is how much deeper can this program make its recruiting inroads in this state. There is the good MAC level player that doesn't want the Toledo or Miami environments like Watson that we can get however there is no way we can clean up on all the good MAC level guys in-state aside from pounding the other schools down on the field. To elevate the program nationally it is going to take high guys like Boo Jackson or Phil Bates that wouldn't be interested in Ohio if they were from the state. The program needs to have one guy like that at each of the QB, WR, RB, TE positions and a brusing offensive line. This year the O line may be so good that as it is at many BCS teams it does not matter who is behind center with all the talent upfront.

This year I see it as Bates (RB), Roback (TE), Brazil (WR) and if the QB play from Tettleton or Snyder can be adequate that should be sufficient for a strong offense. Frank then I think is trying to use the right formula its that the team sometimes not had the QB or RB needed to round out the offensive attack. Had a great RB been in the program the last two years quite possible Ohio would have won the MAC in both 2009/2010. The losses to Kent State and Marshall wouldn't have happened in both years, I don't know if we could have beaten CMU in 2009 but NIU in last year's MAC Championship we could have beat. This is with a great RB that has been lacking for a few seasons.

If the QB position is questionable this year with Tettleton and Snyder, then there is NO REASON that the Cats shouldn't be able to go out and get the best QB recruit in the MAC for 2012.

If we keep getting out recruiting for this position by teams we routinely trounce (I'm talking about you Miami) then something is seriously wrong. At this point, we should be out-recruiting everyone in-state outside of OSU, Cinci and perhaps Toledo.

I wouldn't discount Derrius Vick or Ronnie Bell at QB. Bates moves to RB and then the QB rotation is Tettleton, Snyder and Vick or Bell depending on which one is more ready to go in 2011. I like that Frank is at least getting enough QBs in the system that we don't have to rely on the JC ranks and develop them over 4 years like you would expect from a normal program. Miami has been really good at stocking the QB position through the years and not having to rely on the JUCO.

I would expect both Vick and Bell to redshirt. Bates will play QB before they have to turn to a true freshman.

From watching film, I do think Vick could finally be the HS-recruited QB that finally brings stability to the position. I think he has 3-year starter potential.

I believe that we averaged about 150+ running yards per game last year. (That figure could include qb scrambles.) I think Coach will use our solid O-line and the threats at receiver to put up some running numbers this year.

Take a deep breath on recruiting.  Coach has shown two things lately:  the ability to develop players and the ability to bring in guys who fit our program and, so, will stay.  There's been an emphasis on getting young men who understand that we don't play before home crowds of 65,000.  We bring in guys who get what we are and stay.  Hence, the talent and depth this year's team appears to be beginning to develop.

Don't panic or judge now; first judge the next recruiting class when it's officially announced.  Then judge it over the five years after that.

Multipurpose Center instantly fixes this issue... elite level QBs want a place they can throw all year long... it's probably why we keep having to go with dual threat guys... Pocket Passers want to pass... and they can't do that in the snow in Peden when January comes around...  we're getting the indoor soon... I honestly think once we get that, the flood-gates will open up when it comes to recruiting...

Well said AB.

Vick looks like someone who could be Tettleton's backup for the next few years and then hopefully will be ready to roll.
